Serving an inspired range of fine-dining dishes, Maxwells Restaurant stands strong as Galway's oldest restaurant, still retaining its original proprietor’s name and an ornate period façade. The eatery exercises thoughtful design, from fish caught locally in Galway whenever possible, to an interior in a colourful affair of soft tones, modern features, and minimalist decor. 

With the entire menu up for grabs diners can mix and match with light lunch bites that include Galway Bay chowder (€6.50) and daytime mains such as 8oz sirloin steak with onion rings, fries and pepper sauce (€18.50). Dinner time heralds in starters such as homemade chicken liver pate with brioche (€6.50) and mains that include Galway Bay salmon with champ potato, fresh greens and caper raisin butter (€14.95). Flexibility is key, as diners can go alone or with any combination of others.

Maxwells has garnered many positive reviews, and is rated a favourable 4/5 stars by TripAdvisors. Although some visitors encountered waits for service, reviewers are keen to praise the quality of food, welcoming atmosphere and friendly personnel.

I selected the goats cheese and beetroot salad which was very tasty and just the right portion size for a starter. For my main course I opted for the Sirloin Steak which was real tender and took virtually no effort to eat as it almost melted in my mouth. I was really surprised by the wine that was included in the deal as they are usually cheap tasting in a lot of establishments, but here it was a great selection which really went well with my meal. All the staff were real friendly towards our group and couldn't have done more to ensure we had an enjoyable meal with them.

We were 6, four adults and two children. The service and attention was excellent and the food really good. Great fish pie, very good fish'n'ships [sic]. The girls loved their pasta and even more the little sheets to colour and play they were given. It´s very well located and the atmosphere and decoration are also really nice.
