Keeping things traditional, the Racket Hall Country House Hotel is brimming with authentic cuisine along with music and craic in the Olde time Lilly Bridges Steakhouse Bistro. Regular bands and country dancing events keep up the entertainment, while log fires and plenty of Guinness on tap make for a snug setting in the Hamilton Bar. The watering-hole itself is set in the original kitchen, and still has meat hooks in the ceiling along with exposed brickwork. For a touch of the high life, the hotel also offers private dining in its 19th century Parlour room, with tinkering sounds of a grand piano and personal butlers keeping things more sophisticated.
Explore the trinkets of the heritage town with a visit to Roscrea Castle and marvel at the sections of its circular tower that still stands. The 15th century Franciscan Friary also makes for an impressive ruin as well as the 12th century Romanesque church with its surviving west gable. Taking a walk on the natural side, don the hiking boots and head to the Slieve Bloom Mountains, and pick a route. Walking trails are colour coded from easy to difficult, with green, blue, and red leading the way. Alternatively, the area is renowned for its golfing greens, with many a course to take a swing at.
• En suite double room with TV, Wi-Fi, and tea and coffee making facilities
• Full Irish breakfast each morning
• Chocolates on arrival and late check-out at 2pm with two-night option only
Train: Roscrea train station is under 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel and is on the Dublin to Limerick route.

Our room was very comfortable and still managed to keep the country house atmosphere, the decor in the bathroom lent itself to that. They had a lovely open fire lighting in the bar. There was a great choice for breakfast and service was very prompt each day.

I was surprised to see genuine antique furniture in the common areas of the hotel. The bar/ restaurant was all rich wood and brocade- very 'hunting lodge- and we both loved it. The grounds have lovely little gardens you can wander in and there are views of the Slieve Bloom mountains from the front.
