Heavy with history and enwrapped in centuries of importance, Rome is also light and easy-going, with supermodel fashion sense and daring modern architecture epitomised by the Black Hotel. Scooters zip down winding streets, often accompanied by a cacophony of horns and shouts, past historical edifices and lit-up fountains. Tourists mingle with a steady flow of students, often punctuated by flocks of nuns, and neon modern gelaterias sit beside traditional trattorias serving plates of pasta cooked to traditional recipes.

A sleek piece of cutting-edge design in night shades of charcoal and slate, the Black Hotel offers a stylish escape close to Rome’s city centre. Using natural materials but combining them to create a headline-grabbing look, the hotel overlooks a peaceful green park and provides a striking but relaxing retreat from the dusty bustle of central Rome. An outdoor pool is oasis-like in green gardens and lit by the soft twinkle of spotlights, while a terrace provides a place for starlit drinks. The onsite Edon Restaurant and Luna Bar are suitably urbane locations for a Mediterranean meal or a glass of local wine. Guests stay in a double room with the hotel’s signature dark wood flooring and large windows, complete with a plasma television, a high speed internet connection, and climate control. Each morning guests can enjoy an American buffet breakfast to fuel a day of sightseeing in the Italian capital.
The marvellously preserved Pantheon with its towering Corinthian columns; the ostentatious baroque Trevi fountain with its lit-up gods, teeming with tourists throwing coins; the brooding jagged shape of the Colosseum… Although no visitor could be unaware of Rome’s historical and architectural prowess, the attractions are still capable of overawing even the most seasoned city-tripper. The Vatican Museums are one of the city’s most majestic centrepieces, with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel worth fighting through the crowds for. If in need of some respite from the crush and the historical resonance, wander the walkways of Villa Borghese Park, where you can rent a bike or a paddleboat on the lake, and also discover the charm of the Galleria Borghese art gallery. Or slip out early in the morning and stroll through the streets as they are just beginning to stir, enjoying a strong black coffee in a tiny cafe.
Based in a popular residential district, the hotel is a short distance from a supermarket, and restaurants can be found along Via Aurelia. A short walk from the hotel you can catch the underground train, taking you into the centre of Rome on the A line. Famous for its fashionable ways, Rome is full of high street shops and boutique stores, with Via Condotti one of the leading destinations, while clothes and jewellery boutiques cluster around the Piazza di Spagna. Rome is awash with restaurants serving food from all over the world, although also find time to dive into a busy little trattoria and eat homecooked food while seated at a table with a red-and-white-checked tablecloth. For a familiar banking experience, there are several branches of Barclays in the city, and the British embassy is located on Via XX Settembre, north of the city centre.
Weather and Climate
A fresher feel, but still rarely very cold, with snow unlikely.
Flights: Low-cost airlines operate from Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports.
Airport: Fiumicino Airport is located around 30 kilometres from the hotel, and an ‘Express’ train runs every 30 minutes into the city centre.
Car hire: Choice of operators at airport.
Groupon Top Tip
It is necessary to dress appropriately to enter Rome’s churches, and women in particular should take scarves and cardigans to cover shoulders.
The hotel has been widely reviewed by guests who have commented on the sophisticated and modern décor. Although some visitors would have preferred to have been more central, the views from the swimming pool have made up for this.
On the plus side this hotel has a clean, gorgeous swimming pool, perfect for when you have been trapsing[sic] around the dusty hot city to jump in this cold pool.
