Where the Grand Canal and the Royal Canal happen upon a quixotic rendezvous, lovers of the Gaelic tongue wax lyric about Dubh Linn’s romantic sojourn of shopping, sightseeing and heart-fluttering history. Buoyant in the black pool of Dublin Bay and encompassed by the River Liffey, the town of the hurdled ford was originally a Viking settlement, but today its people, parks, landmarks and monuments make it the vibrant capital attracting many more types of visitor. The historical and contemporary cultural centre of the country, Dublin is handsomely fortified with fine Georgian mansions and outstanding public buildings that impart a timeless class to the city's wide streets and spacious squares. Whilst the domestic architecture of the 18th century domineers, the red brick pedestrianized walkway of the shopping district on Grafton Street is lined with townhouses of old and peppered with colourfully painted doorways. Here visitors can peruse a pick and mix of modern merchandise and antique gifts while buskers, poets and mime artists perform to the crowds. Beyond the bustle and bars, Dublin also offers a tranquil side, with hillside tuffs, vivid cloudscapes and glorious stretches of coast, perfect for wind and kite surfing.

Groupon Recommends
Historical points of interest include the Chester Beatty Library, named European Museum of the year 2002 and boasting a wide selection of early books and manuscripts, including sacred texts. Tip-toing over into the twenty first century, one of Dublin's most recent monuments is the Spire of Dublin, a 121.2 metre steel conical that peers down on the passing pedestrians of O'Connell Street. Phoenix Park is a little west of the city centre and is one of the largest walled city parks in Europe with a 16 km perimeter wall sheltering its 707 hectares of grassland, tree-lined avenues and herd of wild fallow deer. Popular with musicians, the park is also home to concerts, the Dublin Zoo, the official residence of the President of Ireland and Ashtown Castle. For shopping, one must take to the red bricks of Grafton Street where statues and street entertainers are in abundance, dropping by the Grand Canal Theatre at dusk to admire the beautiful city lights on display.

Lovely hotel. Clean, well staffed and the staff are lovely, nothing a bother to them especially those on reception. Would suit all age groups. Close to the Aviva, Shelbourne Greyhound Stadium, 02, Landsdowne Road.
