Lushly green in the spring and summer and glossily snow-covered in the winter months, Risør is characterised by the glassy blue of the fjord and the fresh white of the clapboard houses dotted around its banks. From the Old Norse for ‘thicket’, Risør refers to the closely-knit trees huddling down the slopes towards the natural harbour. A serene retreat, every August the Wooden Boat Festival sees a flotilla of wooden vessels of all shapes, sizes, and ages crowding into the harbour, while the city’s reputation for artfulness and elegant celebration is also bolstered by the Bluegrass Festival it hosts annually.

The Holiday Village
Overlooking the Risør fjord, the slopes of the village are speckled with well-spaced Scandinavian lodges. Constructed only two years ago, these self-catering facilities boast modern interiors, replete with pale wood furniture and panelling, open plan living areas and well-equipped kitchens all warmed by wood-burning stoves and under floor heating. The lodges come complete with linen and towels, and Wi Fi is included. The village has a pool for summer dips, a football pitch and a beach, and local activities including ice fishing, dog sledding and skiing are organised.
Groupon Recommends
Risør is a paradise for outdoor types, with winter activities ranging from the challenge of cross country skiing and sea kayaking, to sleigh riding or a spot of ice sculpting. When the snow has melted and the area is bathed in the bright light of a Scandinavian summer, activities are no less abundant, with climbing, horse riding, and wilderness survival camps some of the options. If you want to gain some background knowledge, Risør itself is a short drive away, and houses a local museum whispering secrets of the city’s past, with an explanatory booklet in English available. Next to the museum is Risør Kunstpark Gallery, displaying work from artists inspired by the local landscape. The city also has its own salt water aquarium which is found on the quay and provides a home for over 100 different species of fish, crustaceans and shellfish. There are also two notable churches in Risør, one built in the Middle Ages, and the other a timber church of the Holy Ghost, built in Baroque style in the 17th century.
Local Amenities
Risør has a compact city centre, with various bars and restaurants including pizzerias, brasseries, and restaurants serving regional cuisine. The city is becoming increasingly known for its arts and crafts, and both small handicraft shops and larger outlets can be found, selling textiles, ceramics, jewellery and glass designs.

Reviews
The Risor Holiday Village has not yet attracted many reviews, however, one visitor has remarked favourably on the idyllic setting, comfortable rooms, and accommodating staff.
The lodges are very comfortable and was surprised by the quality of all the furniture and equipment inside. The setting was superb close to the fjord - the kids loved the boats and the football pitch, the outdoor pool was closed but that is to be expected in September! Overall a wonderful short break with kind and attentive staff - even though we arrived well after midnight they made us feel very welcome and even gave us some milk for a much needed cup of tea!
