Groupon's Guide to Co. Kilkenny

Nestled in southeastern Ireland, Co. Kilkenny is famous for its medieval ruins, castles, and cathedrals, as well as crafts including pottery, painting, and jewelry making. The namesake capital, Kilkenny, is home to the grand Kilkenny Castle dating back to 1195. Travelers can also visit the 13th-century Black Abbey and its mix of modern and antique stained glass windows, statues, and relics, and venture over to St Mary’s Cathedral, first crafted in the 19th century. Coming back to the present day, visitors can stop by the National Craft Gallery Kilkenny Design Centre which exhibits contemporary pieces by Irish designers or wander in and around the city’s interesting collection of shops, pubs, and restaurants.

Quick City Break Went with my parents for 2 nights and the atmosphere around the hotel was a great buzz with birthdays and other parties. Breakfast lovely (had full Irish for €13.90) and the dinner there was lovely too! Guinness is great there too! Location is ideal to explore Kilkenny Castle and you can walk to the centre in about 5 mins Rooms were grand and did the job! Will definitely go back for big birthday celebrations in future.

Lovely mid week break in Kilkenny Staff were wonderful. Had dinner and breakfast. Parking was very easy as they have their own car park. Check in was fast and efficient. Bar and restaurant staff were very friendly and courteous. We had a great stay

Bad experience Stayed here on Saturday night. Rooms are seriously over priced for what they are. €125 per person for 3 people sharing. But what really annoyed us was on the Sunday morning before we checked out, we went across the road for a takeaway coffee and when we arrive back with them the management had an issue with us drinking the coffee on the premises ….despite that fact that we had left well over €1000 between accommodation, drinks and food the night before. Meanwhile there was Apache pizza boxes left in hallways from the previous night, so couldn't see what the issue was a few takeaway coffees? Really bad form and we wont be back.

The Kilford Arms (Kilkenny restaurant): Tasty Food The Kilford Arms has tasty food. I ate: salmon with hollandaise sauce, mashed potatoes, & veggies (broccoli and cauliflower), chicken wings (comes with French fries and a side salad), and a fruit scone (“fruit scone” actually means a scone with raisins in it). My waiter was nice and let me try a Vegetable Cream Soup after saying I hadn’t had one before. One thing to be aware of service wise: the waiters were always accommodating and food came out quickly, but you have to ask for things (like to refill a drink or for the check even though it was a weekday and the restaurant was empty). The decor was nice inside the restaurant- wooden. I didn’t stay at the hotel. The food was a lot less expensive than Dublin and the U.S. I recommend this restaurant and would go back. I would give 5/5 stars if service was impeccable, but this restaurant’s food was very good. I only give 5 stars if you “have” to go to this restaurant while you’re visiting this area because it’s that unique. I was in this area visiting the Kilkenny Castle. There’s cool caves and churches to check out too!
