We prebooked to go for afternoon tea in Catherine's Cafe. Arrived 10 minutes early and we were told the café was closing. The girl said that the boss told them to close early. If we had arrived any later, if would have been shut. We got no phonecall or email to warn us that they were closing early. We were told we could have our sandwich in the café then take home the scones and cake. However, there were no scones left and we were each given a piece of apple sponge instead. As we had prebooked for afternoon tea, our scones should have been put aside for us. Anyhow, we ate our sandwiches in a hurry while the staff swept the floor around us and we took our cakes home. In addition to this, the toilet area was not clean. The floor was dirty and the skirting board was filthy. A very disappointing experience and we won't be returning.

Couldn't fault the food, however it's misleading to call this"afternoon tea ". You basically order a sandwich from the menu and a scone and cake follow. If you ask for a second cup of tea, as we did, you'll be charged extra - not in the spirit of afternoon tea as I know it. It's basically just a good value lunch in a pretty dingy cafe but as I said, you couldn't fault on the fare.

Catherine‘s cafe was lovely food but it really needs to be freshened up as a café in its decor
